10 Easy Ways to Add Turmeric to Your Everyday Dishes and Drinks

With its warm, earthy flavour and telltale rich golden hue, turmeric is enjoying a surge in popularity – and deservedly so. This vibrant spice is a mainstay in yellow mustard, Asian cooking and Indian curries. From dips to drinks and breakfast through dinner, here are 10+ ways to spice up your every day with turmeric.

A smoothy with a spoon of turmeric
  1. Smoothies: Blend a small spoonful of turmeric into your morning shake or smoothie. Try it with peaches and strawberries blended with almond milk or banana and blueberries combined with yogurt or kefir.
  2. Turmeric Tea: Also known as Golden Milk, whisk a small spoonful of ground turmeric and a dash each of ground ginger and cinnamon with a large mugful of almond milk (or coconut milk) and a spoonful of honey in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Simmer for about 10 minutes then pour back into your mug for a steaming hot and soothing beverage.
  3. Hummus: Add a spoonful of turmeric when blending. For another delectable dip idea, add turmeric to hot and creamy parmesan, spinach and artichoke dip.
  4. Scrambled Eggs: Whisk in a generous dash of turmeric when making scrambled eggs, omelettes or frittatas. For a vegan brunch idea, add turmeric to “scrambled” tofu.
  5. Fresh-squeezed Juices: Shake or stir a generous pinch of turmeric into your favourite juice combos such as carrot-orange, pineapple-cucumber or beet-ginger.
  6. Salad Dressing: Whisk turmeric into dressings like creamy tahini or lemon-honey vinaigrette. Try either one drizzled on leafy greens with avocado and tomatoes.
  7. Oatmeal: Add a large dash each of turmeric and cinnamon when cooking your morning oats, then top with almonds and dried fruits (like raisins or chopped dried apricots) and drizzle with yogurt or maple syrup. For a savoury spin, top with a poached or fried egg and breakfast sausages.
  8. Spice-roasted Chicken: Combine turmeric, paprika and salt with minced garlic and enough olive oil to form a paste. Rub on chicken then roast until golden brown and juicy. For a meatless alternative, toss spice rub with any combination of vegetables such as cauliflower or broccoli florets, chopped sweet peppers, carrots or sweet potatoes before roasting on a baking sheet until golden and tender.
  9. Side Dishes: Add a small spoonful of turmeric when cooking quinoa, rice and any other grains.
  10. Turmeric Garlic Butter: Add a small spoonful each of turmeric and minced garlic, chopped fresh parsley and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice to melted butter. Brush on corn on the cob, drizzle over grilled fish and chicken or serve with steamed crab and lobster.
